Milk DrinksDefinition
An espresso-based drink made with roughly one part espresso to five parts steamed milk and finished with a thin layer of microfoam. In Italy caffe latte is a breakfast drink mixed at home, while the cafe latte sold worldwide is a larger, milk-forward beverage usually served in an 8-12 oz cup.
Etymology
Shortened from Italian caffe e latte, literally coffee and milk, by English-speaking cafes in the 1980s. In Italian latte alone simply means milk, so ordering a latte in Rome may get you a glass of milk.
In use
The default milk drink on most cafe menus and the standard canvas for latte art, flavored syrups, and oat or almond milk substitutions.
