The handheld metal handle that holds the filter basket and locks into the espresso machine's group head. Its basket carries the dose of ground coffee, and one or two spouts beneath direct the flow into the cup.
Etymology
From Italian portafiltro, literally "filter carrier," formed from portare (to carry) plus filtro (filter).
In use
"Bottomless portafilter" refers to a handle with the basket base cut away, letting baristas watch the extraction and spot channeling as it happens.
