Espresso Shot
浓缩咖啡
EspressoDefinition
A concentrated coffee beverage made by forcing hot water at roughly 9 bar through a compacted bed of finely ground coffee. A classic single shot yields about 25-30 ml from 7-9 g of coffee in 25-30 seconds, while modern specialty practice often favors a larger dose and a shorter, heavier ratio.
Etymology
From Italian espresso, the past participle of esprimere (to press out, to express), meaning both coffee made expressly for the customer and coffee forced out under pressure. The word entered English coffee vocabulary in the 1940s as lever and pump machines spread.
In use
Baristas treat the shot as the base unit when dialing in a grinder or writing a drink recipe, as in "a double shot over ice."
