Robusta is the trade name for Coffea canephora, the second major coffee species, accounting for about 30-40% of global production. It tolerates hot lowland conditions, resists disease and pests, and carries roughly twice the caffeine of arabica (about 2.2-2.7%). In the cup it is heavier, more bitter and earthier, with nutty and woody notes.
Etymology
"Robusta" comes from the Latin robustus, meaning strong or hardy, a reference to the plant's vigour and disease resistance; the species was formally described as Coffea canephora in 1897.
In use
It is used in Italian-style espresso blends to build crema and body, and forms the base of most instant and canned coffees.
