A coffee blend combines beans from two or more origins, varieties or roast levels to hit a target flavour profile that stays stable from batch to batch. Blending is standard for espresso, where arabica supplies sweetness and acidity while robusta adds crema and body, and for supermarket coffees that must taste identical year-round despite harvest variation.
Etymology
Blending predates specialty coffee: nineteenth-century merchants mixed origins to mask uneven crops and cut costs, a practice Italian roasters formalised into espresso blends in the 1900s.
In use
Labels such as "house blend" or "espresso blend" tell buyers they are getting a roaster's proprietary recipe built for a repeatable cup.
