Single-origin describes coffee traced to one defined source — a single country, region, farm or cooperative — rather than a mix of several. Because it isolates one terroir and one harvest, it lets drinkers taste how altitude, variety and processing shape flavour, and it is the standard format for pour-over and specialty filter menus.
Etymology
The term spread with the third-wave coffee movement of the 2000s, when roasters began printing farm and region names on bags to sell traceability instead of a consistent house blend.
In use
Menus list entries such as "single-origin Ethiopia Yirgacheffe" to tell customers exactly where a coffee was grown and how it was processed.
