A scale built for brewing that reads to 0.1 g and settles in well under a second. Because extraction depends on the ratio of water to dry coffee, weighing both is far more repeatable than judging by volume, scoop or eye.
Etymology
Dedicated coffee scales grew out of cheap digital pocket scales in the 2000s, as espresso and pour-over brewers switched to measuring by weight; built-in timers and auto-tare followed.
In use
Used to weigh the dose before grinding and the water as it is poured, and often to log the flow-rate curve of a pour-over.
