A single or double espresso marked with a small spoonful of milk foam, served in a 2-3 oz cup. The milk acts as a garnish rather than a mixer, so the drink stays close to straight espresso in strength; the layered latte macchiato is a separate, far milkier beverage.
Etymology
Italian for stained or marked. Baristas marked an espresso with a dab of foam so it could be told apart from a plain shot on a crowded counter.

Ordered by customers who want espresso with only a hint of milk; Starbucks' Caramel Macchiato is a larger, sweetened, inverted drink that shares little but the name.
